can I install on clean hard drive??

Asked by Michel Synnett

My current Windows XP o/s has been severely corrupted.... it's just limping along at a very slow speed....I'm using an Opera browser for the moment as IE7 is out of commission. This has happened to me several times in the past with other MS versions...

I want to scrub my hard drive clean with a 'kill disc'; I have the Obuntu CD version 7.04 which I'd like to install afterwards (I plan to save some files and programmes on a flash drive beforehand). I presume this is a bootable disc?

The problem is that after a D:\ drive scan, the installation folder showed three small file with icons named: mt86 plus file 23kb, readme.sbm SBM file 2kbm and sbm BIN file 1,440 kb. and there's nothing like a exe set up file, being very limited in skills needed to work around this, I am concerned to go ahead and undertake what is for me quite a task.

Am I reading this wrong?.

Thank you for your help.

Ubuntu 7.04 for your PC cd is a bootable cd with a graphical installer. It is easier to install than Windows. And it will install to a clean harddrive.

However Ubuntu 7.10 is now out and it supports more hardware and has more user-friendly features like automatic printer detection etc. You can download it from http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download

Well if its any help, I put Ubuntu 7.10 on my daughters PC today she has got a 30Gig HD with XP on it.
When you use the CD it will show you a display choose the Live Ubuntu CD option.
As you do it will then carry on to show you a demo display (for the want of a better description) then choose the Install option,
This will then format your HD to a Ubuntu use.

After this is done it will then Install all of the Ubuntu 7.04 onto your HD for you, but asking along the way of you want it partioned or full format.

Its easy really.

So in short yes you can, Ubuntu will see what type the HD is and do the rest for you.

Bye the way, it may show you an updates to install, carry on with all that and it then should show you that a further upgrade is possible to get from 7.04 to 7.10.

Mike.

Moving to Ubuntu will be a different experience. There are no .exe files to run and things work a bit differently (I'd say better). If you want to install JUST ubuntu and wipe everything else out then you don't need to do anything special. Just boot the live CD that you downloaded (make sure you burn the iso image and not just copy the file) and run the install. When asked, choose the option to use entire disk and your drive will be reformatted and everything will be gone. Ubuntu will be installed and you will be ready to go.

If you did not burn the CD correctly it won't boot. Check https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto for more info.
