ATI Radeon 2600 XT

Asked by Man1aC

Hi!
I have a problem with my ATI graphic card. I have Gutsy and I want to use more advanced graphics option since I couldn't in Feisty. The problem is when I write lspci -nn | grep VGA in the terminal this message is showed:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: ATI Technologies Inc Unknown device [1002:9588].
I tampered a little with drivers, but I couldn't do any good(had to restart quite a times cause and change the xorg.conf because the graphic interface wouldn't show.
Now I have installed Envy and hit the manual install drivers button and it downloaded latest drivers(8.43 I think), and it asked me if I want to change the xorg.conf, but I don't know what will happen if I do so. Please help. Thnx.

Hi !

Go ahead !

the recent ATI cards are not well supported by the free driver, and the restricted driver in the ubuntu repository is quite old.

Tell me if you encounter any problem

Thanks. I restarted comp and it worked a charm. It informed me that restricted drivers are in use, but it works. But I still have a problem, when I typed compiz in terminal I got this:

Don't know. The some options of the compiz are working, but I can't get compizconfig manger opened. Thanks anyway.
