I get display server has shut down when installing Ubuntu on my Vista with Radeon X1950 video card

Asked by soapyleo

I'm trying to install Ubuntu 7.10 from LiveCD on my Vista Ultimate with ATI Radeon X1950 video card. But my display flashes and after a while I get "the display server has shut down".
I succeeded to install with F6 on boot to remove the splash screen, edited the xorg.conf to add 'Option "LVDSBiosNativeMode" "false" to the Device section, this got me to the main screen and I was able to install from the icon on the Ubuntu destop screen. But even after updating with sudo apt-get update I still get the the display server has shut down message.
Is there a new version of Ubuntu or a way to fix this ?

Thanks in advance, RJ

If you managed to install it (this is not clear from your message) run the command below:

dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

It will ask question about your hardware. When it asks for your video card driver choose Vesa driver. This should make it possible to start in a limited resolution mode. When it starts go to System/Administration/Restricted driver manager and install your cards driver from there.

I am running into the same issue when booting the CD for the install. It DOES NOT install.

I have a Lenovo T61p laptop with a nVidia Quardro 570M video card with a WUXA LCD screen (15.7").

When I run the Safe Graphics install it gives a character based error message the the "Display Server has been shut down about 6 times" and it tries again after waiting a period of time only to have the same error.

The same error occurs with a Linspire and Freespire install disk.

Krl, this is what I did to boot into the livecd on a similar setup.

1. Boot into the safe graphics mode from the menu and wait for the error you posted above.
2. At the error screen, press alt+F2 to enter the terminal.
3. Run the following commands:

sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fglrx
sudo pico /etc/X11/xorg.conf (Edit this file to change the video driver from vesa to fglrx)
startx

At this point, your system should be booting into the livecd GUI. Hope this helps.
