dual boot ubuntu & win xp

Asked by neo

Hi,
I was using Win XP before.
Later i installed Ubuntu 7.04 with dual boot and both worked fine.
Then there was problem with Win XP whereby Win XP cannot start (not sure virus or something else).
Grub still working as usual, choose Ubuntu it will run Ubuntu, choose Win XP but Win XP cannot run.
Therefore i formatted (slow format not quick format) the Win XP and reinstall Win XP.
Now Win XP runs but cannot see Grub anymore, thus cannot run Ubuntu from harddisk.
I took the Ubuntu CD, and it booted Ubuntu from CD only.
From Ubuntu CD i can see all my Win XP files and also files from existing Ubuntu harddisk installation.
My question, how to return the grub during startup so i can choose either Ubuntu or Win XP.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Neo.

Hi Neo,

What you need to do is re-install grub, and that will allow you to choose which OS you want.

There is a quick way to do it detailed here:
http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/ubuntu/reinstall-ubuntu-grub-bootloader-after-windows-wipes-it-out/

Here is another howto, for more reading, which has longer and better explanations of what you are doing:

Hope this helps!
