no sound ubuntu

Asked by wmhuffman

Just installed Ubuntu 7.10 and have no sound from videos or music files. Rhythmbox shows song playing, but no output from my sound card. I have checked volume level and made sure nothing is muted. Still no sound. I used the test tabs in Sound Preferences, but no changes make any difference. I have a Sound Blaster Audigy Sound card and it is showing in Device Manager. Help Please.

I've just recently installed 7.10 (Gutsy) with an Audigy 2 ZS [SB0353] and I had to play around for a while but eventually got sound to work. I think all I really needed to do was

System > Administration > Services : activate 'Audio Settings Management (alsa-utils)'

Volume Control > Switches [Tab] : select 'Audigy Analog/Digital Output Jack' (was the default)

Volume Control > Edit > Preferences : select 'Surround' and turn up the volume

If this doesn't work, try using alsamixer in the terminal. Just unmute everything and turn up all the volumes until something works, well it did with me!

Hope this helps.
