Gnome stops during start

Asked by Eckart

After having a problem with OpenOffice (OO crashed) Gnome stops during start at the first start-symbol.
In protected mode I can start Gnome without problems. OpenOffice works, but how can I solve the start problem?

It's Ubuntu 6.06.

What do you mean with "protected mode"?

I can start Gnome only, when choosing the secured (or protected) mode of Gnome at the login screen.

Could you generate a crash report for OpenOffice?

Hm, I forgot, what I exactly did to crash OOo. So, it's difficult to reproduce.
Is there no way find the problem what causes the halt of Gnome?
Any start scripts to cancel or something else?

Something similar happened to me, but not with OpenOffice. I had just installed Ubuntu along side with windows XP. I was installing all of the updates for Ubuntu, and while waiting for that to happen I was editing the menus. Then all of my menus froze. being new to this OS I did not know any command hotkeys and was forced to restart. when I re-booted and logged in i got nothing but a blank screen. I was able to run the terminal by restarting gnome with Crtl+Alt+Backspace and then Ctrl+Alt+F4 and could log in there, but I don't know unix verywell so this was pretty much useless to me. I just re-installed eveything on my computer. there was probably a better way to solve this, but I didn't know, I was frustrated and it was late.

That's ist. I think I have also to reinstall Ubuntu, because no one could tell me how to stop these start scripts, wich cause the halt of gnome.

;-)
