First off I am a HUGE noob with Ubuntu and linux in general, this would be my first attempt at even using the OS. I have no sound and i've been cruising the fourms for answers. I have already attempted to unmute everything and i have played around enough with the mixers. Someone mentioned using this command

austen@MotherLand:~$ cat /dev/urandom > /dev/audio
bash: /dev/audio: Device or resource busy

And that is what i received.
I've also played around with both ALSA and OSS but with no avail. Again I am very new to this so I'm trying my best, appolgies for anything i have messed up in my explaination. Thanks.

I've also attempted to delete the .asoundrc* files and believe i succeeded in this but not quite sure. I also performed this command--

1) sudo /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart
2) sudo chmod 666 /dev/snd/*

"Then go back to System->Preferences->Sound and hit TEST. You should hear a beep."

But to no avail.

I was unable to get the sound working for quite some time too, and after messing around with the fiddly bits of the mixers, I finally discovered that all I had to do was open the mixer in gnome by double clicking on the speaker, go to the "Switches" tab, and uncheck the "Audio Analog/Digital Output Jack" checkbox. Then once I unmuted everything and cranked up the volume everything was smashingly fine.

Hi !

many people are having problems with this audio controller. Do as advised here, and everything should work again !

Alright well i figured out the problem. I had a buddy go through (who is a veteran of Ubuntu) and reinstall the latest version of ALSA. If anyone is experiencing troubles with sound and Ubuntu recognizes your sound card and you've played around with the volume control enough to be considered rape, just try this method. It involved much play in the Shell and a restart, followed by Ubuntu's beginning theme and a a congrats high five.
