sudo /sbin/shutdown -h +25

This is exactly the command I use.

Or you can open system-prefs-sounds and choose the sounds you want and don't want.

I use it when I go to bed, so I tried again and it didn't work. I think, the issue is that the sound comes from the PC not from the speaker.

If you go into that sounds window there is an option to turn off the system beep. Is that the sound you are referring to? If you mean the Ubuntu music, you should be able to uncheck that option too and not have it play. Although, if you are using a term to shut down then maybe it doesn't follow those settings.

I turned off the system bell in system-prefs-sounds.
So, any idea?

So with the system bell off it still beeps? I'm not sure what to do but you could try using modprobe to kill it. Something like this might work...
