no sound after installation

Asked by john6 on 2006-09-11

I have windows XP running well on a dual system so all obvious checks need not be made. My problem is to do with configuring and I'm a newbie. Both are disk installations on a new Dell 1100.
I have a second computer and have just installed Xandros vers2. Again the identical problem - no sound.
The Xandros problem is exagerated by telling me that I have a winmodem and do not need a driver, when in fact I have a Connextant D850 56k V9x DFC modem. The wizard does not allow any options to change. It insists that I have a winmodem which also prevents my Paradise internet connection I have read many posts about sound and I'm confused by the very different answers to the problem. I'm digging hard to understand the codes. It frightens me to death.

                           Can you help

                                    John6
Is this where I tangle with shell codes for the first time?

Hi, John-

What version of Ubuntu are you running? You just mentioned Xandros.

What is the default sound card listed under System --> Preferences --> Sound?

Do you have any audio devices listed under System --> Adminisration --> Device Manager?

Hi - Thanks,

Yes, Sound MAX Integrated Digital Audio.

I did send a follow up email. My Xandros is Installed with Windows and
Windows sound is not a problem so I am assuming that I have no hardware
problems unless the sound card is not compatible. So I would like to sort
out only the Xandros sound problem fiirst to avoid any confusion and I'm
easily confused at this stage (although learning fast) but theXandros disk
Installation went smoothly except no sound. Of course I have checked all
sound settings - found to be correct.

                                                    John.

Honestly, John-

I don't know much about Xandros.

While the core pieces of all Linux distributions are the same, not all the tools are included with every distribution.

Also, there are multiple desktops (heck there are three different versions of Ubuntu desktops) which offer different sets of tools as well.

I haven't had any experience with Xandros (one of the few that I haven't tried), but it looks like it uses KDE for the desktop.

I am currently using the GNOME desktop which has a different set of tools so I can't easily follow along with you.

I searched the Xandros site and found these two articles in the Frequently Asked Support questions which might help:

http://support.xandros.com/kb-view.php?topic=91

and

http://support.xandros.com/kb-view.php?topic=80

and I searched the knowledgebase for sound and came up with this listing:

http://support.xandros.com/kb-search.php?search=sound&version=all

The Xandros User Forums can be accessed after setting up an account here:

I hope this helps.

Good Luck.
