Installed ubuntu 11.10 and /var/log/messages is missing?
Where is this file?
Has it been replaced by another log file?

I have a feeling that it may be deprecated. Using grep to search for strings relating to (for example) mounting USB drives shows entries in kern.log, syslog, and messages on my 10.04 system. On my 11.10 test system these string searches still find entries in kern.log and syslog, but of course messages is missing.
Was there something in particular you were looking for? If there was something that only got logged in messages, and is no longer logged at all because of this then that might be a problem/bug.
