Invalid system disk during boot from cd

Asked by blacktiger

I have a blank FAT32 HDD with nothing but the file system on it. I was planning on booting from the live cd and then using ubuntu to convert and install itself onto the hard drive but when i go into boot options and select boot from cd i get a message that says "invalid system disk replace the disk and then press any key." I cant install any other OS onto the HDD as i dont have the original cd (it was designed for windows me) and it is too old to be able to handle any of the OS i have lieing around as its a spare laptop i had lieing around. I got the laptop around 7 years ago. Is it impossible to boot from the cd without an OS already on the HDD? I have a copy of DSL which i also tryed to boot off but i got the same message. Since i dont have any windows OS that this computer can handle if i do need another OS to actually be on the HDD before ubuntu can do live boot from cd, do you know any that i can install? I have a external case which i can plug into my other computer incase i need to install other stuff onto it. I tryed installing ubuntu onto the HDD and then installing it back into the laptop but that didnt seem to work either....any ideas?

If you are sure you enabled booting from CD in the BIOS (and gave it priority over the HDD), then this could be caused due to either your system not supporting booting from CD, or the CD's you burned were corrupt.

If possible, boot the CD you burned on another system and check for integrity using the boot option on the ubuntu CD. If it is the case that the laptop cannot boot from CD at all, then you could try a netboot. See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/Netboot for information about how to netboot.

I set the Bios to CD first and i just get a small msg that says

Intel(r) Boot Agent version 3.0.03
Copyright (c) 1997-2000, Intel Corporation
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM

Invalid system disk
Replace the disk and then press any key

I had a look at the netboot option, but this is the first time ive used this computer in a few year. I dont know what its IP address would be nor its name.

How did you get the CD? Did you download and burn it?

If so did you make sure to burn it as an *image* and not as a data-cd? You can check this if you look at the CD. You should see a whole filesystem tree, not only one .iso file.

I hope this helps.

Yep, The CD is a burnt image and im pretty sure theres nothing wrong with the CD itself. Ive installed Ubuntu on my external hard drive whitout a problem but i had to get rid of it as i couldnt boot xp without having the hard drive always plugged in when i start up the computer

I think you must .not. have this PXE booting message, the pc is trying to boot from the net.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Intel(r) Boot Agent version 3.0.03
Copyright (c) 1997-2000, Intel Corporation
PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM

Invalid system disk
Replace the disk and then press any key
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I think you must check your bios setting.
Try to disable PXE or netboot or other related.

Hope this help

Hi, i had the same problem as you with this and through Google I found a program called UltraISO it basically writes the Image onto the disk properly for you. After that the message that we both got didnt show and it loaded up, my PC now works with Ubuntu.

NOTE: I did Format my Hard drive just before i tried the new Disk i made.

Can you help with this problem?
