My computer hangs often with gutsy amd64.

Asked by Tbjorn

My computer: ASUS M2N32 WS pro motherboard, Gigabyte GeForce 7300 GS grafic card, 2GB memory, SATA harddrives, TSSTcorpCD/DVDW SH-S182D IDE DVD burner and HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GSA-E40N USB DVD burner. Except for a few small things the computer worked well with feisty.
Programs that will cause the computer to hang: K3B, Google earth, Einstein, Kobo Deluxe.
Programs that are prone to cause hangs: Firefox, Boinc manager, PDF reader.
gDesklets won't run at all. I use desktop effects with extra, but have tried without and it made no difference.
Shall i go back to feisty or is there a cure?

Try to check some common system log messages files:

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

gedit /etc/var/log/messages

and

gedit /etc/var/log/syslog

Hope this helps you to find some more error or diagnostic message from the system.

Then you can also try to chech dmesg messages:

dmesg | less

Press q to exit from "less" command

Hope this help

Thanks for the trying to help my.
The files /etc/var/log/messages and /etc/var/log/syslog was empty.
dmesg had a few oddities: 1.No NUMA configuration found
2.Marking TSC unstable due to TSCs unsynchronized
                                             3.CPU 0: aperture @ 53c0000000 size 32 MB
                                                 Aperture too small (32 MB)
                                             4. eth1: no link during initialization.
Failure registering capabilities with primary security module.
I don't know what this means.
