Unformatting xfs filesystem: any possibility?

Asked by Uqbar

My XFS external disk got formatted by mistake as EXT3. Shame on me.
Of course the disk was far from being either empty or filled with junk.
No other write operation has been done on that disk.
Is there any actual possibility to unformat it back to XFS or to recover as much content as possible?
Really many thanks in advance.

I dared doing it.

xfr_repair -v /dev/sdd1

It restored the whole disk as if nothing was done wrong.

hello,
I have the same problem. Accidentally I got my Plextor dual bay NAS (2x1 TB in RAID mirror) in XFS reformated. In fact I wanted to format a host USB drive on the NAS in XFS format with the Plextor. In less than one minute it was done, but it was too late when I understood that I reformated the nas disks. Nothing was written on the discs later on. This is a disaster, because al my important data are stored on the nas disks ! Please Help. Can you really recommend me The Linux command proposed ?
Thanks a lot for your answer !
Patrick

I fixed the disaster by repairing the file system with xfs_repair.
