screen resolution changed by itself

screen resolution changed by itself and is locked. i went to screen resolution settings and it doesn't give me the option to change the resolution. it acts like the 640x480 is the only screen reso that i have in the box you click to change it. i click on the box and there is no drop down box to choose another resolution from. i took all the modes out of x server except for the one that i preferred but that didn't last too long. now i'm having the same problem as i did before. please help

i took a look and tried the first thing. hopefully this solved my problem. if not there were others to try on the site. thanks for the site.
