How can I obtain a patch to enable me to find the modem on my laptop

I have an older laptop, which now works well, as I have installed Ubuntu.
It was always crashing with XP windows.
I would like to access the internet but cannot find the modem !!
Would I have to connect a serial external modem to get on the internet ?
