Not able to play videos

Asked by kn4ma

I am not able to play any types of movies at all in movie player. When I click on the movie to play it it just sits there. If I try to play a movie off CD the CD will spin and the quit and still nothing happens.

I thought it might be due to lack of codecs and that's another issue can't find where and how to download and install the codecs.

Following the restricted formats page should fix your problem.

Basically, open a terminal (click Applications --> Accessories --> Terminal) and then type apt-get install PackageNameHere

Replace PackageNameHere with each of the packages listed on the page.

You will need to probably add a number of Ubuntu Universe and Multiverse software repositories first as outlined (with pictures) here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Repositories/Ubuntu#head-5bbef89639d9a7d93fe38f6356dc17847d373096
