Ubuntu installer can't setup network on Shuttle XS35GTV2

Asked by Powderking

I'm trying to install Ubuntu and XBMC on a Shuttle XS35GTV2.

The installer can't set up the network connection.
I've tried Ubuntu 10.04 32 and 64 bit netinstall, minimal and server, Ubuntu 11.10 32 bit netinstall.
The Debian Squeeze 64 bit netinstall installer has no problem.

I was able to install Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit server but only without network connection. I then could load the jme module:
# modprobe jme
# depmod -a
without errors.

But I can't get eth0 running.

The output of lspci is:
02:00.5 Ethernet controller: JMicron Technology Corp. JMC250 PCI Express Gigabit Ethernet Controller (rev 03)
03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor C., Ltd Device 8176 (rev 01)

How can I install minimal Ubuntu (only ssh-server with working network)?

Can you give the output of:

sudo lshw -C network; lsb_release -a

Thanks

Also, make sure the connectivity lights are flashing on the interface.

Thanks for your reply!

I have now installed the server version of Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64. There's no light on the NIC nor the router flashing since the driver couldn't be loaded.
The Ubuntu installer warned me with a red screen when he wanted to set up the NIC.

The Debian installer had no problem setting it up.
But I'd like to stick with Ubuntu for this media player frontend (XBMC standalone).
That's why I'd like to install a minimal Ubuntu.

Btw: I use a 100 MBit/s router.
I read that there may be problems with Gigabit connection so that shouldn't be my problem.

What is XBMC standalone? XBMC is an application....

xbmc-standalone is the same as xbmc --standalone

From xbmc manpage:

       --standalone
XBMC runs in a stand alone environment without a window manager
and supporting applications. For example, that enables network
              settings.

From this XBMCbuntu guide I couldn't even do the first step (install minimal Ubuntu).
I wanted to install Ubuntu 10.04 netinstall and the installer couldn't setup the NIC and told my this with a red screen and an error message.

Here a picture of the screen I get after choosing the keyboard layout in the install
http://666kb.com/i/bxwj71eo7kih0picp.jpg

It was the 32bit Oneiric installer from here:

Tried the desktop installer?

No. But the 10.04 server version.
I don't need a desktop environment.

Do they have different approaches to setup the NIC?

Can you help with this problem?
