Why is this OS only for computer people and not the common man!

Asked by NandoRodz

Now these OS's are great if only the common man can be able to manage them better and easier, take the instalation of other windows based programs? what is the mistery ? Where can I get a file coverter to install windows software with this OS?
I know it is free but do we nee a college degree in computer science to be able to easily play with this OS. I think that if it is free, it should as easy as windows to operate (which it is) but all the features of windows should be able to play here tooo. If it is FREE than make it easy for us folks or send us to a school to get the know how, or how to deal with the frustration of not having control.
EVERY ONE should be able to use this without the "F" when it comes to software based for windows OS's Please let us lose to use this OS please please prety please!!!!!

Where can you get a converter to install windows software on a non-windows computer? You can't. How often do you run Mac software on windows? Come on, don't blame the OS for something it's not designed to do.

However, there is Wine. It allows some win software to run in Linux. Do these options exist for the other OSs? For free?

Let's see, you are blaming Ubuntu for not being easy enough to install? It's easier than windows. That should be enough. If you don't install windows, then don't install Ubuntu. Buy a computer with it already set up. Simple.

Why should all the feature of windows be available? It's not windows. If you want windows, then use windows. No one is forcing you. If you want to use Ubuntu then spend some time learning how it works. Don't complain that it doesn't magically work the way you need it to.

To say that Linux is as easy to install as windows is perhaps true. However, very few people install windows, it comes pre-installed with their machine.
If people had to install ANY os on a bare machine after they purchased it there would either be a lot less computer users or a lot more affluent computer geeks doing it for them, take your choice.

Once installed, Linux requires more technical skills than the average user is willing to learn to get it working the way they may want it. Love it or hate it, windows does work well and installing new applications is standard and straightforward. I like Linux, but am quite attached to a few windows apps and will probably just run multi boot systems. I've had very little success with wine, but until I get a larger hd am limited so I should hold my judgement on that one.

The same can be said for windows. If you install it yourself, it takes a bit of work to get everything working but again it's usually done for you. If you buy a computer with Linux pre-installed the issues will be similar to windows. Even windows has is its issues even when pre-installed. Point is, don't complain if an OS doesn't do what you want - help fix it, use something else, or deal with it. And especially don't complain to the volunteers willing to help you when they can.

Regarding windows working well, I'd say that's a misperception. Windows doesn't complain when it's not working right so people keep going thinking that is well when often it isn't. Linux is more obvious about problems. Installing new apps in Linux - especially Ubuntu - is vastly more simple and straightforward than windows - at least the 1000s in the repos which is all most users need. Finally, remember you are comparing a 100% free (both in $ and licensing) OS to one that costs between $100 and $400 just for the OS plus the costs of all the necessary add-ons like anti-virus, firewalls and apps to do just about anything since windows itself is pretty useless. Even a mac comes with more functionality. For the price, you can't beat Linux. If you want to spend the money that is your choice.

Well Jim this was straight forward about wanting to have it easier to handle Ubuntu, I have changed to Kubuntu and I like it much better even though I had the same problems, but I'm getting the hang of things here and I just might become a developer!!!!!!! any how I'm having fun and loving it.
Now I hope that it is not because I had complained that my updates downloads seem to never complete or get instale, or there is something that I'm missing here?
I do like these OS's better than windows anyway because microsoft never put out a full proof OS or software, there have always been many problems and their updates do slow down the computer operation. Of course you know I'm sort of new and learning about all these great operating systems.

So how can I get all these great updates and finally get my system up to date and running even better than what is now Jim?

NandoRodz, it may have been straightforward to you, but it came off sounding a bit like trolling. If you weren't then I apologize for not taking your question more seriously. It would help, though, if you gave a clear description of the problem. I suggest opening a new ticket and clearly explaining the problem. It's unlikely that someone with the answer you need will find this question. Be sure to include error messages and such. Getting updates is nearly automatic. Just click the update notifier. If that is not working then there must be some sort of error generated or a specific behavior. Just saying it isn't working won't be enough information to troubleshoot the problem.
