Problem using USB adsl modem, new to Ubuntu

Asked by Peter Underhill

Having recently successfully dual-booted my windows XP system , I am new to Ubuntu and having looked at the various guides available to download and install drivers/firmware for my Speedtouch 330 modem it scared the life out of me . I do not have any experience of command line style instructions and feel at the moment I need a quicker route to installing my modem and configuring ubuntu Edgy Eft 6.10 so that I can access the Internet etc. Does anybody know of a modem that comes supplied with the relevant drivers etc in order to install the modem / router without the need to write firmware etc. It took me three goes and 6 months to get this far in dual booting my system. Sounds daft so I apologize in advance, if I try the solutions offered already it will take me forever.

Hi ! Welcome to Ubuntu !

First question ,why have you installed ubuntu edgy eft 6.10 ? This version is one year old. Why haven't you installed the newest one, ubuntu Gutsy Gibbon ?

If you will use an ethernet router to connect your dual boot pc to the net you don't need to play with any driver, simply connect the cable and configure it with the really simply pppoeconf command.

For your Speedtouch usb modem

Try this:

Ok you don't do not have any experience of command line style instructions but give a chance to a already made deb package:

Download the deb package and save on your hard-disk using Windows it is only 1.1 megabytes
http://www.squeezedonkey.com/svn/linux/trunk/releases/ubuntu/32-bit%20i386/usbadslmodemmanager_0.5.8_i386.deb
then copy this file on a floppy disk

Open the floppy from your Ubuntu and try to install the package

Please give us some feedback

Hope This Help

Hi elart.it, and Oliver Lacroix thanks for the very speedy advice. I tried the download from Steve Harper as suggested by elart.it , pleased to say I,m getting warm in solving the modem prob. Using the download and loading from disc seemed to give connectivity to my talktalk server, only problem is that I keep getting a return message from the talktalk server about configuring my username and password (incorrect)< but I know these are correct from using them on Windows. I have not been able to confirm my speedtouch 330 is the version 4 so perhaps this is the ;problem, any ideas. I,m pretty sure my modem has made a connection to the server but when I try to access web pages I keep getting the password warning returned from the ISP server.

and be sure to choose the correct parameters for your provider

Hi Oliver, I re-entered the ISP configuration details again yesterday and wonders it worked , using Speedtouch 330 modem, the connection through the downloaded modem manager takes slightly longer to connect than equivalent speed in Windows, but who,s quibbling. Many thanks this modem program is a blessing for beginners like me, thanks also to everyone else who offered help to a Linux beginner.
