viruses?

Asked by k_chupe

don't have a problem yet but want to be safe. is it possible for linux to get viruses or not? a friend told me that he wouldn't worry about it because most people use windows and that's where hackers target their attacks. is this true? i don't download anything to get a virus or open any unknown emails, so should this be a concern?

virus makers don't target ubuntu/linux and even then ubuntu/linux has a much better securicy policy so that chances of you getting a virus are one in a billion. just take the same precausions you would with windows. don't open executionable files from people you don't trust. you don't need any kind of anti-virus software and you shouldn't worry about it (i have personally used linux without any kind of anti-virus or a firewall for many years now and have never even heard of anyone ever getting any kind of virus)
