Can't get Ubuntu 7.10 to install on Dell Optiplex GX-260: Harddrive not found

Asked by aijelt

I've got a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 Dell Optiplex GX-260, 512 MB of RAM, 40 GB WD harddisk (WD400BB), DVD-ROM player. I downloaded the Ububtu 7.10 .iso to install Ubuntu on this machine. Booting the system from the CD works perfectly, I even am able to connect to the wireless network at home. However, when I try to install Ubuntu on the harddisk I get to the point in the installer where the partition is to be choosen. Nothing appears in the window, where I expected to see atleast about 30 GB of un formatted, un-partitioned harddisk space. 10 GB of the harddisk is currently reserved for and used by Windows XP, some games just seem to need it :-).

How do I get this machine to run Ubuntu from the harddisk? Any help appreciated!

From Everest, I get the following system information:

Hi !

to determine if this is a problem of the graphic installer of a deeper one, could you please post here the result of the command

sudo fdisk -l

(type that in a console while using the liveCD)

and post the result here.

Hi Olivier,

Thanks for the quick reaction. I've just booted the liveCD and forgot that my USB stick was still connected to the computer. I opened the console, typed sudo fdisk -l and the result was that the USB stick was found but no mention of the harddisk. Then I tried the installer again and, at the point where I have to choose the partitions, I now saw the USB stick, not the harddisk. So I assume the partition chooser seems to work.

Can it be that I might need a seperate IDE driver CD for the Dell's IDE driver? Not very likely as the DVD-ROM player on the same IDE device (different cables) and works. Can Cable Select be a source of trouble? Or should I've changed a BIOS settings prior to installation?

With kind regards.

Bert

Could you also post the output of the "lspci" command ?

for some dells, booting with the option pci=nomsi seems to help. You might want to try that

http://ubuntu1501.blogspot.com/2007/01/installing-ubuntu-on-your-dell-1501.html

only a guess anyway.

The pci=nomsi trick didn't workout.

I've worked my way through the BIOS and can't find something being wrong really. I've even tried cheating a bit by downloading the Dell Ubuntu 7.04 CD-image, but trying to use that resulted in a black screen and a monitor crying that the input is out of range. The monitor is a Philips Brilliance 107P.

Thus so far no luck. I'll keep on trying but hints towards a solution are still welcome.

Hi !

You may try booting with that option

pci=routeirq

What you should be looking for in your bios, is an option for IDE or ATA support. LIke "Legacy ATA support" or something. Just try to change it.

Hi Olivier,

Still no joy, unfortunately. I've got to let it rest until next weekend, having too much things to do. The plan for next weekend is to do a Debian install, as I've learned that Ubuntu is heavily based Debian and I do have some positive experiences with Debian (although I can't remember if that was on a Dell Optiplex GX2xx series or not). If I succeed I will post it here.

With kind regards and many thanks for the patient help.

Bert
