Asked by dumpa

Hi,
I followed the instructions for installing and running compiz-fusion from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/CompositeManager/CompizFusion

when I run

compiz --replace

I get the following:

Checking for Xgl: not present.

Flags: bus master, VGA palette snoop, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 248, IRQ 21
Checking for texture_from_pixmap: present.
Checking for non power of two support: present.
Checking for Composite extension: present.
Comparing resolution (1600x1200) to maximum 3D texture size (4096): Passed.
Checking for nVidia: present.
Less than 65536kb of memory and nVidiaaborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity

Can someone help me with this?

what exactly is your graphics card model? nvidia, right? using the restricted driver? having less then 64MB graphics ram?

"Less than 65536kb of memory and nVidiaaborting and using fallback: /usr/bin/metacity"

seems your graphics card doesn't meet the requirements...

Thanks, I don't know how to check my graphics card model.
But I think it should meet the requirements, I think is a good one.

I go to system settings and all i see is

Graphics Card: nv
Driver: nvidia

If I go to configure it says the graphics card is NVIDIA GeForce FX (generic)

Sorry, I was able to run compiz fusion, but now the screen turns black, sometimes you are able to use it for a while but eventually. Right after you log in the screen flashes with some black area.

What I did was to install xserver-xgl and reboot. This made possible to run compiz --replace.

any hints?

if you have a nvidia card you don't need xgl. this is just for ati cards as far as i know. nvidia supports aiglx out of the box which should be enough for compiz.
try getting rid of xserver-xgl...
try running nvidia-settings to find out more about your graphics adapter and tell us...
