Ubuntu uses only two runlevels for startup rc1.d and rc2.d. What do you want? Do you want to boot your system without starting the Xserver?

I want my ubuntu to boot directly into the shell without booting into the gdm. I read somewhere that this can be done by changing the runlevel.
There it was mentioned that this could be done be configuring the /etc/inittab file. However, i couldn't find any such file in the filesystem.

Is there some method of doing this???

Sorry to say, but i don't understand this. I saw there were six rc*.d subdirectories in the /etc directory and you are talking of two only..

To boot into the shell you don't need to change the runlevel. You may change the kernel options from "quiet splash" to "single".
Christoph said Ubuntu uses only 2 runlevels at startup, the others are for different targets.
