Can someone please help me.the cd states that if i use the unbuntu cd as a live cd and install it the default installation will erase all existing software and data from my pc...i dont want that to happen....and if this is the case that it will erase it where does it put it as i have valueable information and pictures and programs on it that i dont want erased...what do i do?

The best thing you can do is to create a new partition from within Windows (Partition Magic is a wonderful tool). Do not format it but leave the space unallocated. Normally, if you have only 1 hard drive, you should be able to resize the partition.
When you are installing Ubuntu the graphical installer will allow you to select the partition where you want to install Ubuntu. Select the unallocated space and let it do its magic.
You should be able to access all files located on your Windows partition but you will, by default, not be able to write to that partition.

Please also take into account that you will not be able to use Windows specific software (like for example MS Word en MS Outlook) on your Ubuntu installation.

Can you help with this problem?
