Why won't visual effects work?

Asked by korty13

Whenever I go into appearance and try to turn on visual effects I always get the same error message, which I have no clue what it means.

It says:
The Composite Extension is Not Available.

What does this mean and what can I do to fix this?

My first guess is that you don't have 3d effects enabled in your graphics driver. This is usually solved by installing the graphics driver for your card. If you have nvidia (or possibly intel) it's a pretty easy step. If you have ATI I don't know. ATI users usually have a lot of problems.

Open up system-admin-restricted driver manager and see if there is a graphics driver you can enable. If so, click it and let it install. You will need to reboot. After that try turning on visual effects.

I am afraid that ATI does not support compiz (visual effects) yet. I had similar problems too. But I hope that the fix is on the way as ATI released specification of their drivers and promised to repair compiz functionality.

Strangely, I can have visual effects enabled with default open driver. But it has lots of other problems, so I must run official and proprietary driver that does not support effects.

Can you help with this problem?
