Can't access tty

Asked by Bruce

I recently installed Ubuntu 5.10 on my PC (dual boot with Windows XP Home SP2).

I used the ShipIt CDs that a friend provided.

After installation, on first run, I was given this error:
"/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off"
I'm then given a command line.

What should I do?

I'm quite a noob when it comes to Linux!

First take a look at this forum post:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=94250&highlight=job+control+turned

Looks like something got fubared during the install. Here's a few questions:
* Did you do anything out of the ordinary during the install?
* Are you using grub or lilo (if your not sure your probably using grub)
* Was Ubuntu installed on a slave drive? (dunnot why this matters, but someone in the above forum link seems to think it could be a problem)
* What architecture is your computer?
* What kernel did you install?

Just a standard install.
I'm using Grub.
No, it was my only drive, setup as a master
My PC is i386 and 32 bit
I'm not sure what kernel I installed. It's whatever comes as default.

I tried re-installing Ubuntu and I still get the same error.

Thanks again for your help

I unistalled Ubuntu and tried intsalling all three of the different kernels with no luck. I also tried LILO, but not what it says in that forum article.

Hmmm that is odd. I have to do some studying but I can poke around google a bit afterwards. Can you provide me with some specks on your hardware?

I only have one hard drive. It's trying to load from hdb2, should I change this to hda2?

Thank you very much for your help.

It turns out that my hard drive was the slave.

When I built the computer, I'm sure that I put the jumper in the master side. But it appeared to be in the slave.

Switched it over and it's working fine now.

Just decided to install Ubuntu 6.06.1 Desktop and ran into a WHOLE lot a problems. One similar to the one mentioned here. After checking jumper settings (Master / Slave HDD), swapping to a newer CD-ROM wiping HDD, etc etc....Turns out that the image I downld was corrupt..:-( After re-downloading the image from a different location everything installed fine. One tip if I may...; Depending on how new / old your CD-ROM is once the image has been downloaded mount it on your local HDD (WIndows). During this action if the image is corrupt chances are it won't mount!!! Anyone have any suggestions for image verification tools..?!?!??!.

Thanks.

I had a similar problem installing Version 5.10. I got the same message: /bin/sh: can't access tty: job control turned off, but there were two more lines:
 # [4294682.647000] sdb: assuming drive cache: write through
[4294682.648000] sdb: assuming drive cache: write through

I tried installing from another cd, although it was from the same shipment, and I got the same messages. Should I try *another* cd or should I assume that the image is fine and it's my computer that's to blame?

Also, after I created a partition, Windows wouldn't boot any more. It said that some files were missing or corrupt. I wouldn't mind much, except now I have no operating system.

Help.
