What is the operating system of your desktops? My best bet would be is to search for an Asset Management Software suitable for your need.

If you could give more details about your units and how you want your network to be set up.

try
sudo apt-get install xos
sudo xosview -geometry 406x488 -font 8x16 +load +cpu +mem +swap +page +disk +int +net &

on a single machine works great.... try running it from ssh on the remote machine.

Can you help with this problem?
