How to set the screen resolution for the boot up/splash screen

Asked by achapp

Hi
 I am using Ubuntu 7.10 for amd 64 . I hav been using feisty before tis . Last week I run a fresh installation of gutsy . The problem started after the new installation .I am having Samsung sync master 510N monitor . The problem I am having is with the splash screen that comes during booting . When it comes up my monitor use to display " Not optimum mode , Recommended mode 1024 X 768 60Hz" The splash screen seems to have a resolution of 1280X1024 . The login screen is OK having the recommended resolution . How could I change the resolution of the splash screen . I am appending my menu.lst file down this message . When I run the live CD there is no problem . The splash screen comes at correct resolution .

For the boot splash, try to configure usplash in /etc/usplash.conf:
xres=1024
yres=768

Thanks for the information . I had reconfigured the uplash.conf file to 1024X768 from 1280X1024. Now the splash screen that appears during shutdown/Restart is according to 1024X768 resolution . But still the boot up splash screen hasn't changed in resolution . Its still having 1280X1024 and still the message from the monitor is displayed . This message is not displayed during shutdown process now .

For GRUB, you can try to modify the file menu.lst by adding vga option with the value 791.

For example from your file above:
title Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=8f194e77-8fa7-44e5-bce5-c7d16223cec4 ro quiet splash
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic
quiet

put "vga=791" at the end of the kernel line:
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=8f194e77-8fa7-44e5-bce5-c7d16223cec4 ro quiet splash vga=791

In addition to the advise from glandux, you will need to update your initial ramdisk to get the correct resolution during boot. You can do this with the command:
$ sudo update-initramfs -u

This is a bit strange, as the command getopt comes from package util-linux which should always be installed.
Can you try to install package util-linux, using Synaptic Package Manager (via System --> Administration). After you installed that package, run the command sudo update-initramfs -u again.
