Yes, it's a licensing issue. Info here

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats

"To play most DVDs you'll need the libdvdcss2 package. This package is available using Medibuntu. This is a third party package, and not supported by Canonical." From link above.

I have libdvdcss2 package but I understand that I have to install xine and gxine files these are the ones that I cannot install. I tried to extract them and tried a terminal command line bt to no avail.

You don't have to install xine. I don't have it and I can play DVDs. All I did was install the ubuntu-restricted-extras, mplayer, movie player, and libdvdcss. All but the last can be installed from add/remove under the apps menu.

I am using this machine as a stand alone and do not have internet access. so I will need to get a wireless system for it so that I will be able to get the restricted extras package for it as i do not seem to be able download it on my other machine and transfer it over. Thanks for your help and I will keep you posted when I get internet access on my other machine. AJ Peters
