Failed to upgrade to 7.10

Asked by Emmettly

While upgrading to 7.10 from 7.04, I got this message:

"Getting upgrade prerequisites failed

The system was unable to get the prerequisites for the upgrade. The upgrade will abort now and restore the original system state.

Please report this as a bug against the 'update-manager' package and include the files in /var/log/dist-upgrade/ in the bugreport."

Something similar had happened when trying to download updates. I go a failed to fetch update message then but if I tried again it would continue where it had left off as it had downloaded the files to the temp folder. I went to software sources and chose the best and fastest server and the updating hasn't had a problem yet. While updating I usually get around 50 kb\sec but upgrading only gets me 10 or so kb\sec. I tried upgrading again and again to see if it would pick up from the temp folder and it got a bit further but then gets stuck while "fetching file 1 of 2" and every time it starts file 1 of 2 all over again and can't finish it. So either Ubuntu has a problem with patience or the server keeps resting itself or something.

In the /var/log/dist-upgrade/main.log it says:

"2007-11-07 11:30:09,897 INFO release-upgrader version '0.81' started

All other downloads besides updating and upgrading never have any problems.
Thanks for helping!

Try to make a fully 7.04 update before to upgrade to 7.10.

Please open a Terminal from the menu Applications->Accessories->Terminal and type:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get clean

give your user password when requested, you don't see nothing when you type it, then press enter.

Then to upgrade to 7.10 press ALT+F2 and type into the opened window

update-manager -d

I had already updated 7.04 fully. I tried what you said and got the same old "Getting upgrade prerequisites failed" message while fetching files. Does the 7.10 CD have a way to upgrade the already installed Ubuntu?

You need the Ubuntu 7.10 alternate cd to upgrade 7.04 to 7.10 http://releases.ubuntu.com/7.10/

Read infos and instructions at the end of this page http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading
