libdvdcss how?

Asked by swift240

Hi all,
I am trying to play some DVD films I have some play some do not.
I get the error libdvdcss needs to be installed.

I am pulling my hair out, I don`t know how to get them onto my system.
I have downloaded the relevant files and I tried to unpack them into the right folders but no luck.

I tried to copy them over but I get an error saying "I don`t have permissions"
I followed the help file but I still can not change permissions to copy them over.
Right now I am totally lost

Can some one help me please.

TIA,

Mike.

To install libdvdcss you should add the medibuntu repositories: http://medibuntu.org/

First you have add the medibuntu repository. Follow the directions on the site Andrea linked. Permission errors are caused by trying to edit root files with a user account. The solution is to use sudo or gksudo to indicate you want to make the changes as root. For example,

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

to open the file to add the new repo.

If you have done all that you install the file this way:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss

Or whatever the proper name of the file is.

Thank you, I can now watch all my DVD`s.

You made it more easy for me to understand.

This Linux/Ubuntu thing is not so bad once you get used to what you need to do.
