Live cd errors in vista

Asked by dooglis

Hey all
I recently received the ubuntu disc in the mail from conical and had a go at looking at the os in the live mode (running from cd) after deciding that it was not the right choice for my laptop (due to issues with hhd space) i have installed it on my home pc. My laptop runs Vista Ultimate and pc runs Xp home- the problem is that on my laptop is has caused SERIOUS system errors- firewall not running, no networks detected, no diagnostics, the list goes on. I contacted hp to help resolve this issue and they were unable to help as they said the damaged fiiles from the vista install could only be fixed if it was reinstalled, i didnt tell them of course that i had tried to run ubuntu as they would imediately have said it was my own fault and they cannot do anything. This however did not happen on my xp machine which i found odd. Does anyone have any suggestions that would save me having to completely reinstalling vista and making backups of all my files?
I also arose to this issue (which is why i turned here) that when trying to reinstall windows the setup program has an error stopping me from reinstalling, any ideas?
If live is supposed to run from ram how has my hard drive been affected? and if ubuntu is so good how come it damages my other OS?
Thanks in advance
Doug

Hello !

Running Ubuntu from the LiveCD doesn't touch in any way your installed OS, Vista or XP alike. So, the failure comes from another problem.

The only way for Ubuntu to mess up some files on your Windows system is to mount the NTFS filesystem, accept a security warning, browse the files and delete them by hand. So it's not possible to do it without noticing ...

This answer is not some kind of denial : it's pure fact : a LiveCD runs in RAM-disk, so that it doesn't touch the physical HD. It's designed this way ...

Regards,
Benoît

I realise that it should not affect my hdd that is why i find the problem weird. but i have never seen anything like this before and the problem only appeared after runing the live cd so telling me that it does not affect the hard drive is no use. If it has not affected the hard drive why are things not working?
