There are many descriptions on the web. It is likely that some of these do not apply to the directory service you are running. What Directory Server are you running? What version?

Thank you for replying.
Currently I am running MS Active Directory but want to shift to Linux platform.
I want to know if those 40 XP clients can be authenticated through a Directory service that runs on linux.

Yes, it's possible using Samba & OpenLDAP but it's far from obvious.
http://www.samba.org/samba/docs/man/Samba-HOWTO-Collection/samba-pdc.html
or search for 'Samba Domain Controller'

Can you help with this problem?
