Compaq laptop/Ubuntu 7.04 keyboard not working

Asked by TDJP

Hi,

I'm really new to Ubuntu (and Linux in general). I have tried to install 7.04 (Feisty Fawn) on an old Compaq Evo N620c Laptop. Checked out with the live CD first and all worked OK. After installing and getting to the login screen, my keyboard doesn't work (the built into the laptop one), so I can't login to actually use the OS (and don't know enough about command lines yet to go further). There are, however some keys that I can use on the keyboard, Caps Lock registers (message on screen) and if I set the num lock on I can type numbers in the login box (but no backspace, so can't delete). Don't have a spare keyboard yet to try it out but will do soon. Has anyone ever come across this?

Thanks in advance
TDJP.

When you see the grub menu, can you use te keyboard? Try to press ESC before ubuntu boot, to see the grub
Then, try to boot ubuntu in safe mode.
This will reconfigure your keyboard, if is possible.

hope this helps

Keyboard Settings

Xorg may fail to detect your keyboard correctly. This might give problems with your keyboard layout or keyboard model not being set correctly.

To see a full list of keyboard models, layouts, variants and options, open.
/usr/share/X11/xkb/rules/xorg.lst

Keyboard Layout

To change the keyboard layout, use the XkbLayout option in the keyboard InputDevice section. For example, if you have a keyboard with English layout:

Option "XkbLayout" "gb"

Keyboard Model

To change the keyboard model, use the XkbModel option in the keyboard InputDevice section. For exsample, if you have a Microsoft Wireless Multimedia Keyboard:

Option "XkbModel" "microsoftmult"
