Installation Ubuntu 7.10 does not work, even with alternate CD

Asked by BA20

Hi all,

I would like to install Ubuntu Gutsy on my computer, but I have a problem with the installation CD.

I tried the normal installation CD: "PC (Intel x86) desktop CD". Afther booting, I get the menu where I choose "start or install Ubuntu". The Linux Kernel loads. A couple of seconds later I get the following error:

--->
udevd-event[2286]: run_program: '/sbin/modprobe' abnormal exit

BusyBox v1.1.3 (Debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu7) Built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

(initramfs) _
<----

On ubuntuforums.org (link: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=598878) there was someone who told me to enter dmesg | less to see the problem, but that didn't work out.

I also tried the alternate CD and there I get an almost identical error, but with more information. (Please see the attachement I posted on the ubuntu forum, attached to message #3.)

Also the person told me that it could have something to do with IDE.

Some more information:
- Knoppix Live CD 5.1.1 starts without any problem.
- The installation CD of Ubuntu Feisty works fine as well.
- My PC is a AMD Athlon XP (0.13) 1155 MHz
chipset: VIA KT400(A)/600

I still hope that there is a possibility to do a clean install of Ubuntu 7.10 on my computer. I cannot solve the problem myself.

many thanks in advance,

BA20

Try to put some kernel boot options to solve this: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions

Hi elart.it,

Thank you for the link. I understand that I can change the bootoptions, but I don't know which one to start with. Do you have an idea for which options could be the best to try, looking at the errors I got?

I just compared the bootoptions of Feisty and Gutsy, but they are the same. So maybe it has something to do with new options in Gutsy which were not in Feisty. I don't have an idea what these differences could be.

thanks,

BA20

On Ubuntu 7.10 install cd there is new kernel version.
The kernel options that you can write are not destructive don't be afraid to try them.
First try to play with acpi options

noacpi

Hi,

The boot option "all_generic_ide" solved my problem.

Thank you for your time,
