Blank screen when booting to live USB 64 bit Natty

Asked by MorrisseyJ

Hi my question pertains to a problem i get when trying to run a live USB of 64 bit ubuntu 11.04.

After i get to the GRUB screen offering me to "Try ubuntu without installing"; "Instal Ubuntu" or "Check disk", if i click either "Try ubuntu without installing", or "Check disk" i get a blank screen and the system appears to freeze.

I can successfully boot to a live USB of the 32 bit version of 11.04. I can also successfully boot to a live USB with 64 bit version of 10.04.

Did you MD5 test the ISO you downloaded?

Have you tried the boot option:

nomodeset

Hi,

So i think i have stumbled across a work-around.

I checked the .iso with MD5 and it was fine.

Not being sure what the nonmodeset boot option was i brought up the command line when at the GRUB menu (by pressing 'c'). Once there i typed in nonmodeset, got an error message telling me that it was an invalid command.

So i tried 'exit' at the command line and the live USB booted.

Workaround then seems to be summon the command line at the GRUB screen by pressing 'c' (following the instructions at the bottom of the GRUB screen).
Enter 'exit' at the command line.
Boot from there.

I am not sure if this is sufficient or if anyone wants me to try anything else to see what is exactly going on here. Just give me instructions and i'll follow them and report back.

Thanks,

j

Have a look at "Black screen when Ubuntu starts" https://answers.launchpad.net/grub/+faq/1682
