can't install ubuntu...tried lots o suggestions
hp comp
vid 5600 fx 250 mb (maker?)
onboard video
fic am37 motherboard came with hp pavillion 701 (not an exact match on the hp website...minor differences but it seems to match)
1.5 gig ram
cdr 2700
athalon 1600 proccessor
everything has been disabled in bios (onboard lan and audio) sm bus controller couldn't find driver for it. motherboard ms-6367 version 1.0.
nvidia chipshet gforce is the onboard video.
my cd rom is kinda old...might have reading trouble...during xp install on the driver cab it had trouble reading off the disc (slightly scratched disc) made a funny noise...
if i need to get into bios i have to take video card out and switch to onboard video...otherwise it's just a blank screen.
i don't know crap about computers, my friend built it for me two days ago and that's what he told me to say what i have.
so i start to install unbuntu after a few minutes and then it says uncompressing linux...,ok booting the kernal.
and it just sits there.
i looked on the site and some people suggested pressing f6 and putting in stuff...i haven't tried that but i don't want to put stuff in if i don't know what it's gonna do...
and then some people said that linux had trouble with hp...or maybe a video card issue...
and i did have some problems with my computer earlier. the day that i got it i i loaded warcraft got on the internet...didn't have virus protection but i got mcafee the next day and i found around @ 2000 things to be quarantiened.
i decided
and then my shortcuts didn't work...
so i was screwed. rebooted, then when it started again it asked me for my username and password. a password was never set and it had never asked me or the guy who built it for a password. so now i can't get into xp anymore...i tried leaving the password field blank and enter, didn't work, tried putting administrator in the username field no password, didn't work. had some help me, he put in adminstrator and some passwords (no idea what) that didn't work either.
Sooooooooooooooooo. Really it sounds to me (not that i know much) that it would be a hardware issue?
or any other ideas?
