Do you mean if it's possible a distribution upgrade from 6.06 server to 7.10 desktop?

Not sure but I think you have to install ubuntu-desktop package THEN try to upgrade to newer versions (6.10 -> 7.04 -> 7.10)

Maybe better you save important data then fresh install 7.10 on your PC

No, I would like to stay with my the 6.06 server, but would like to upgrade the 6.06 desktop to 7.10. I'm willing to go the upgrade route (6.10 -> 7.04 -> 7.10)
Thanks for your help.

upgrading from 6.10 to 7.04 and then 7.10 should work fine. you can find out more information about upgrading from old versions here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/UpgradeFromOldVersion

it should be full compatible with any other installations of linux you have (such as ubuntu server or what not)

if however you have both the server edition and the desktop edition installed in the same place they will both be upgraded.
