Yes, you just cannot charge for it but you can charge for support if you want. Your own distro will not be supported in the Ubuntu channels.

Thanks for your answer, and for respect 100% the GPL licence i think to write in "all" the scripts addon my distrot with the term of this licence , there is something i m asking too :

the file /etc/legal is declarative for ubuntu, i suppose we must not modifie it, so i think create a file "the_name_of_my_distrot.txt" in /etc which says that this distribution is an modified ubuntu and a list of the new scripts used .

my finality is to be sure to distribute a 100% GPL distro and 100% respect about Ubuntu.

There are lots of Ubuntu spinoffs which include, but are not limited to:

Ultimate
Backtrack
Mint
MoonOS
Gnewsense
Zorin
Pinguy
Ylmf

and many many more, just go for it dude. Linux is there to be customised. It's one of it's mantras :)

ok , but i think customized is a thing and to do it with fairplay is an other thing.

too i ve understand the following things , effectively we may use, customize and make a distro about ubuntu but the more important we must not forget the respect of the "licence" and the "copyright" to preserve the free than the GPL offers to us.

My conclusion is yes, you re right in your answer, but we must be responsable in edit scripts and some files to protect us , the users and garants than our programs will stay free.

thank you for you re answers ;)

@actionparsnip: You are being too strict here. No licence in the Ubuntu main or universe components is allowed to restrict whether you can charge for the software or not. We're even quite explicit about that here:

  http://www.ubuntu.com/project/about-ubuntu/licensing

"While Ubuntu will not charge licence fees for this distribution, you might want to charge to print Ubuntu CDs, or create your own customised versions of Ubuntu which you sell, and should have the freedom to do so."

There are of course other restrictions. The web page above is a reasonable summary of the basic permissions packages must grant in order for us to consider them free.
