my cd/dvd player/burner doesnt work

I recently install ubuntu as a operating system on my p.c.....but now my dvd/cd/ player / burner does not work....
is there something else that i need to install to make it work, and if so could it be downloaded to my p.c.

andrew are you still around ? because i now have ubuntu, should i find/ install a new driver for my "e" drive ( cd/dvd, player/burner?)

drive letters do not mean aything in Linux, they are a windows construct. What applications have you tried burning in. The optical drive itself needs no drivers.

When i put a c.d. in my player.... it tells me it has NO autorun ....whatever that means....as you can tell , i know nothing about this ( or computers )

i have not tried to burn any applications..... i tried to install a antivirus program,,and it ( computer) told me i have to autorun.

a) Why are you installing a windows antivirus on a Linux PC

Thanks actionparsnip, I never new that i didn't need antivirus , /spyware protection with the linux o.s.
like i said earlier, i know nothing about computers. but i still have a problem with my c.d./dvd player/burner ....
it tells me that it cannot find autorun, could you help with that ?
P.S. thanks for all the info earlier.......but i still would like to use my c.d./dvd player/burner
