Problema al arrancar las X en Kubuntu 7.10

El problema es que necesito aceleracion hardware pero no consigo que arranquen las X usando el driver apropiado para ello. Tengo una tarjeta muy vieja Radeon 7000 pero que funcionaba perfectamente en Kubuntu 7.04 usando el driver "ati" o el "radeon" en el archivo xorg.conf.
Mi desagradable sorpresa es que al cambiar a Kubuntu 7.10 sólo consigo entrar en modo grafico usando el driver "vesa" en dicho archivo de configuracion.
Al ser tan antigua mi tarjeta no dispone de drivers propietarios pero, como ya he dicho funcionaba correctamente antes de migrar al 7.10 y de hecho funciona bien en Suse 10.3.
He probado "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" con las opciones automaticas y tambien "Xorg -configure" pero nada funciona.

El error que me da es el siguiente:

Hola. Te cuento que si hiciste una actualización (no instalación desde cero) de una versión a la otra de Kubuntu, es decir de la 7.04 a la 7.10, lo que te sucede es que al actualizar tu viejo driver quedo compilado para el kernel viejo, es decir que tu driver sigue estando instalado pero no funciona, necesitas desinstalarlo totalmente, y volverlo a instalar para que compile nuevamente el kernel. Se entiende? Espero que así funcione, de todas formas ya tendremos una solución. no te preocupes.

Hola a todos, en primer lugar gracias por contestarme tan pronto, es muy de agradecer.
No se ha solucionado mi problema, ademas debo añadir que hice una instalación limpia, desde cero, no una actualizacion. Para ello tuve que usar el dvd de instalacion arrancado desde la unidad lectora y entrar en el modo de instalacion grafico seguro o algo así, pues desde el modo normal no arrancaron las X.
Posteriormente logré manejarme (y de hecho ahora escribo desde mi KUbuntu) con el driver "vesa" en el archivo xorg.conf, pero como ya he dicho sería una pena no poder usar la aceleracion hardware que ofrece mi, por otra parte, antiquisima tarjeta grafica, pues la necesito para usar OpenGL, jugar etc.
He intentado bajar la profundidad de color de 24 hasta 8, la resolucion de la pantalla, he probado con el monitor que uso, un AOC, y con otra configuracion de él como "generico".
Lo único que se me ocurre es que la version de las Xorg del nuevo Kubuntu 7.10 no es la misma que la del viejo 7.04, en este último todo funcionaba correctamente. Mi hardware no ha cambiado en nada.
Así pues debe ser el software el que da problemas.
¿Cual es la solucion?

Hola de nuevo, gracias por responder.
He seguido las instrucciones del how-to pero como me temía el driver propietario sólo funciona con tarjetas Ati mas modernas que la mia, una radeon 7000.
El objetivo es hacer funcionar esta tarjeta con el driver libre "ati" que viene por defecto y que hasta el kubuntu 7.10 funcionaba perfectamente.

Hola, amigos.
Os cuento que he solucionado el problema mediante un truquito.
He cargado los repositorios de KUbuntu feisty 7.04 y he desactualizado el paquete "xserver-xorg-video-ati" que es el que contiene el driver "ati", instalando el paquete del feisty antiguo en vez del nuevo gutsy 7.10 que no me funcionaba.
¡¡Y todo arreglado!!!
Como me imaginaba el problema es que la nueva version del driver ati de las Xorg no va bien en mi ordenador y por eso he tenido que instalar el antiguo.
