Dual Boot XP & Ubuntu

Asked by David Wilkinson

I have windowsXP Pro, I have made a separate linux partition to install Ubuntu into (Partition N). Can I boot up with Ubuntu and install into my partition N and have a dual boot system with XP still on the C drive and Ubuntu on the N drive. My partition N has 18GB, I think that is plenty.

Hello

Yes, you can Dual boot WinXp & Ubuntu, absolutely no problem. I am new to Linux, and I managed it successfully.
First step Winxp to be installed then Ubuntu. In your case Winxp is already installed Good. Firstly if you are used to Windows create a 1GB to 2GB partition fat32 in your extended partition for Ubtruntu Swap Partition using Windows disk manager or whatsoever.Thereafter boot with Ubunto cd, select install and then follow the instruction. The tricky part is the partition menu. Be a bit careful and select manual. It looks different than windows something like hda01, hda01 hda02, find the partition to install Ubuntu select in type ext3 and don’t forget the Swap partition for Ubuntu. Think carefully in this step other wise you might lose windows. Thereafter it simple. Ubuntu has a boot loader called Grub. Grub will do the needful for you for dual boot to be successfull.
BUT remember in case you decided to say goodby to Ubuntu after that , Winxp may not boot as Grub loader gets installed in the boot sector for your primary partition of your HD.

Better I would suggest what I have done. Two Hard Drives. One for Winxp & another for Ubuntu. You aleady have xp don’t disturb that.Change your jumper setting on the winxp Hd as slave. Connect your second Hd jumper as Master and install Ubuntu same as above. Grub loader will install in the Ubuntu Hd boot sector and do the needful for your dual boot. The advantage of this is if you disconnect your Ubuntu Hd in future and set the jupper back to master in Wxp Hd there would be no problem. All this is my first hand experience last few days. I am happy it worked out well for me. All the best for you.

In case your stuck I will try to help you as far as I can.

Hello Sandip,

I cant help you much as I am a new user myself. Do a serach in Google & you will get all the answers about Ubuntu and learn the same. Ubuntu is fantastic. I too like it, but there's still a lot to learn as its different from windows. I can only help as far as installation goes as per my above reply.

Regards

Sandip,
If you have one hard drive and Windows installed on that the your windows partition should be hda1. As Clayton said, partition a space for root directory and swap. When you boot he cd and install just be sure to avoid messing with had1 and you should be OK. Mount the spall partition you made as root and the other as / (root). Again, as long as you do not change or modify had1, windows will be OK. If everything goes wrong you should be able to use your windows cd to repair the windows installation.
 BUT, Before you start.
**BACK UP YOUR FILES**

Good luck.

Hi, all. I need help from anyone here who knows my problem well. I am a veryt new linux user. Presently, I have installed ubuntu successfully in a USB harddisk, and my existing hardddisk is in Win XP which I didn't changed anything to its partition. When I reboot PC, I can see the GRYB boot loader in action providing the bootup option configuration menu: Ubuntu or WinXP. I can boot either one when I select either one. Now my problem is, when I remove my USB harddisk and reboot my PC, the GRUB boot loader gives an error msg "Error 21". The PC hangs there and my Win Xp won't boot up. It seems that the boot loader has infiltrate into my win XP boot sector although I didn't do anything to winXP harddisk during ubuntu installation. As Clayton mentioned above on similar issue, I didn't change the win Xp harddisk jumper to slave, so maybe that's the problem. I reckon now that even I reformat my ubuntu USB harddisk, it won't help as my win XP boot sector still has GRUB boot loader stuffs. But now, without reformatting both my Win XP and Ubuntu to restart all over again, I wonder if there is any existing and quick solution to make it such that even after I remove my USB harddisk, my win Xp harddisk can still bootup.

Need desperate help.
