SATA interface can be used with two different protocols. Search in BIOS setup if you can change mode to/from EHCI.

I am using Ubuntu 10.10 on my Vaio E series laptop. My CD drive is not working, though I can see a CD/DVD Drive icon on my Computer. In the System>Administration>Disk Utility a CD/DVD device appears but it shows "No media inserted". Also there is nothing in my BIOS options where I can change the mode to HCI or IDE. I am posting the output of

$ sudo lshw -C disk

Please help !!

Your issue is different from mmohan one. Solution is probably not in BIOS.
Please open a new question.
Please check with a pressed CD or DVD (not a burned one) if it show in /media.

I found that there is some hardware problem with my dvd drive. When I booted my computer with a bootable cd (working fine when i checked it on other computer) the BIOS was unable to boot it, also there was no sound of disc being spinning. I would advise you to do this check.

Hi Saz, thanks for your quick response...

Well in my case, the light turns on the DVD drives (both of them) so they are powered..
But you are right, now that you bring it up, I hear a sound when I put it in there but not the 'spinning sound' you are absolutely right about that.

Besides, I looked in my BIOS' boot device priority and it's not showing up in there at all... Only Floppy (yes floppy) and my HDD are being detected.. The flat cable (IDE) style cable seems to be properly connected.

My bios is a American Megatrend v 2.54

Could be a BIOS issue I guess!

I will try in WinXP to see if it might come up there later on when I reboot today.
Thanks for your help.

Saz,

I found my problem!
It was that in the BIOS, it was set for SATA. The choices were: PATA, SATA, BOTH..
So I set it to BOTH.

Thanks for your help.

Pierce.

Well in my case I did set it to Internal Optical Drive (out of HDD/Int. Opt. Drive/External Drive/Network boot) but the problem persists, I guess its a hardware issue. Did you get your drive working when booted? Is the BIOS of your computer old?

Do you have a dual boot system? If so, you might try with a different OS..
If not, I would try a live CD (or USBKey) and see if the problem persists...

No I didn't try to boot up with the CD though.
Yes my computer is pretty old... It's a HP Pavilion a775c and the bios version is 2.54 (American Megatrends).

Another thing you might try is to flash your BIOS with a newer version, see if it might kick boost it?

My system is not dual boot. Flash drive works perfectly, thats how I installed ubuntu on my system. My system is not old though, its vaio e series. I am almost sure that the problem is not with the BIOS, its with the cd drive hardware. Well Pierce, lets not flood this forum with our posts. Mail me at <email address hidden> or add me to your buddy list. I will try my best to help us.

What I meant to say is if you had dual boot, you could have tried by testing another OS (in order to rule out the possibility that it might be a linux or BIOS issue).

Just standard troubleshooting steps..

Mine is working fine though now. Like I said, it was a BIOS issue (in my case)
