all four workspaces display at same time

Asked by L. P. Luigi Espenlaub

Want to reduce the number of workspaces to one.
new dual boot install 11.04 Classic
 on an Optiplex gx270
with intel82865G on board video [supported and auto discovered presumably]

all four work spaces try to show at once,
All are labeled workspace 1
If I get a menu to not disappear, clicking on it results in a black box the size of the menu.
moving down with the mouse, menu items flicker so quick I cannot read them.
If I manage to click on one, the window will open, or be blocked by that black box.
so far I have not found one that will let me reduce the the number of workspaces to one, or revise the video settings.
"Displays" definitely is not a help, nor additional drivers, which lists none.

I have not asked the right question in the search boxes because none of the listed problems are this one.

What should happen, is after logging in, is that I get a stable vga with stable menus
the other three workspaces should not show through the primary,
They should not all be labeled workspace 1

reduced the number of workplaces to one.
Any time I click on a menu it still flashes then goes to black.
I have two windows open and cannot get the x to close them.
they are listed on the bottom bar in text, but the menu close option only flashes and clicking on the space it occupied does nothing
clicking on the power button in the upper right, I presume that is it, the circle with the vertical line in it, will not initiate shut down.
even with one work space all the icons in the top and bottom bars repeat.
I have tried the windows button and the menubuttons but only get a flashing screen.
The launcher refuses to show on any edge of the screen.
found the keyboard shorcuts but it now seems frozen and not responding to the keyboard. Ctrl+alt++ and - and ctrl+alt+del do not respond. will have to do a hard boot and see what happens

The intel82865G on board video [supported and auto discovered presumably] was auto discovered,
but sadly is not supported in the 11.4
Installed a Number 9 video card G850 AGP with 4 mg of sd ram.
Upped the mother board support from 1 to 8 mg of ram [may have been unnecessary]
After resetting the card twice the motherboard recognized it.
there are a few places where a closed window leaves a black area on the upper or lower panels.

Very happy now.
I will try, [first time] to start a bug report so someone can confirm that 11.4 does strange things to the intel82865G on board video and:
1. remove it from the supported list, Or
2. find and correct the appropriate open doc driver.

Thank you.
