Brother MFC320C printers drivers into Dapper Drake do not show up in Dapper !

Asked by Clemo

My printer Brother MFC3420C is correctly detected by Dapper Drake, but Ubuntu has no inbuilt drivers for it. The Manufacturers site (Brother) has Debian drivers for this Multi-function printer, (LPR Printer drivers, CUPS Printer drivers, and CUPS wrapper drivers). They all have extension .deb

I managed to install the drivers into the system using Synaptic package installer. But when i go back to ADD NEW PRINTERS using the wizard, the drivers do not show up. I have also tried to point the wizard to the source of the drivers, but i noticed that it expects to find files with a PPD format, yet my drivers have .deb extension, and thus im unsuscessful in this. I have even rebooted the system but the drivers wont show up.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

The .deb files should probably install a PPD. The .deb files may be old or the ubuntu CUPs could differ from debian CUPS.

Someone else has had success following this tutorial: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=686523 and changing a few instructions (see http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=686523#post686523)

That may help you out, if not, replying on that site asking for clarification may give you a better answer.

I have an updated Cups driver for MFC5840cn that installed correctly but I still cannot get add new printer to find the driver. it recognizes my printer on the network but immediately goes to the printer database that does not have my printer model. I need to get this OS to read the driver and install my printer.

Can you help with this problem?
