problem trying to reboot Gutsy

Asked by Vic

Hi, I have a Laptop and I just installed Gutsy on it. My problem is that I can shutdown normally, but when I use the reboot option, it does everything to the point of showing the logo of the computer manufacturer and nothing else happens, it freezes there and I have to push the power button to turn it off and start it again.

Any idea of what's going on?

Thanks.

Hello

One possible cause of what is happening is that ubuntu did not recognize the option of ACPI, and when you try to shut down the computer, this is frozen. The solution to this problem is to edit the grub and add the following line at the end: acpi=force. Doing so will activate the advanced options of energy and your laptop would turn off correctly.

When you shutdown your system forcibly and turn it on, the ubuntu crashes and not boot correctly, sometimes.

So you need to press ESC after reboot to view the grub menu, And you also need to do this in order to edit the grub, by pressing E on the front line.

I hope you have been of assistance.

Hi, thanks for your answer ivancete.

I tried what you suggested but with no results. I'm still having the same situation.

Any other idea of what I should do?

You need to enable the "Demon of Energy Management. To enable it go to the menu "System-> Preferences-> Sessions' and the 'Startup Programs", you have to enable the "Demon of Energy Management." If you do not get, you can add, writes in "Command": gnome-power-manager and labeled it loaded at the beginning.

I think now I understand what happens. Apologies if I did not express properly. I speak Spanish. I speak very little English. But let me help you.
Try booting your system with a CD inside the unit cdrom. But not booteando from it, just inside the unit, it sometimes makes it work boot. I succeeded the same, but on a PC.

Then verify that your installation has been carried out correctly. Check partitions. Check how much space beam assigned to the swap, if it is a lot, you should decrease it, use only 128mb.

But you might not be able to access the inside of the operating system, then use the LIVECD

And describing the laptop, company, model, etc., I can help you better.

Hope this help. Regards

Hi, thanks again.

I checked for the Demon of Energy Management and it was already marked on the Startup Programs.

I also added
acpi=off apm=off
to the grub

btw: where should I put that? I'm not really sure I added it on the right place.

Well none of that worked and I didn't understand what you're suggesting with the cd.

I search everything, i have not another answer at this time. I'll to search more later.

I tell you that this is a common problem, everybody have a problem with acpi or apm,
If they can shut down, unable to restart, can't reboot, if can reboot, can't shutdown... hahaha,

I also happens to me sometimes the same thing, the pc does not shutdown
Not which will be the real solution, but there are many things to try to fix it.

Later I will continue trying to find a solution through Google
