VMWare 1.04 install on 7.10 fails with xinetd error

Asked by mahesh

I installed desktop version 7.10, following which wanted to install vmware server 1.04. The install keeps failing saying it is looking for the super-server xinetd or inetd and the .conf files. I followed the instructions on other support forums and tried to install xinetd.

Unfortuanately, ubuntu errors out saying that there is no package for xinetd and refers me to 'rinted'. Installed rinetd after which ran vmware install...same error, vmware keeps repeating that I need xinetd or inetd and then re-run vmware config.pl.

Help!!! spent several hours on this without any success.

Thanks

If you just want to run another OS on top of fiesty, I was able to set up virtualbox without any of the problems I had in vmware. Just do: sudo apt-get install virtualbox.

Sorry to ask a stupid question, I am a newcomer to linux...is Virtualbox the same as vmware or is it a ubuntu module that allows several os's to run...I am looking for a solution that will enable me to run multiple operating systems at the same time and was reccomended trying out VMWare Server..

Appreciate your help.

You can do that with Virtual box. I run windows XP in virtualbox when I need to. You do need the windows xp disk to do this though.
Here is a tutorial

I was told to use vmware as well, but I had too many headaches getting it to run. Found this and have had no problems
