Would Xubuntu be better than Ubuntu

Asked by idontlikehippies

The is not really a problem. I just have a old Compaq desktop. It has a old AMD K-2 333mhz processor with 389 megs of ram. And I was wonder if I would notice a large improvement from using regular Ubuntu instead of Xubuntu because regular ubuntu is really slow.

You should do, but it won't be amazingly fast still.

Well, I actually have a similar pc at home with kubuntu installed. I tried both Ubuntu and Kubuntu and I cannot declare Ubuntu is much faster than Kubuntu... Both systems have decent speed for that kind of hardware.

Xubuntu will have a smaller memory overhead. Xcfe is a pretty light weight desktop and requires less memory to run. My Ubuntu default Gnome desktop takes over 50 MB by itself. Cutting that down will help, but your applications can still take up a lot.

Firefox can take 60+ MB by itself and Open Office is taking close to 70 MB.

I love xcfe for its snappiness and if the stripped down (by design) interface matches your desires, I'd say go for it.

Can you help with this problem?
