This message appear when launching totem:
Video codec 'XviD' is not handled. You might need to install additional plugins to be able to play some types of movies

Run Terminal via Accessories and type:
sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras

Let it complete, reboot and try playing your Video now, it must play just fine.

You can install the XviD Codec via Applications -> Add/Remove ->
you might change to the option: All applications available

and search for this: GStreamer plugins for aac, xvid, mpeg2, faad

This will install the codec that you need.

Bye
