synaptic doesn't work

E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report.

i just installed ubuntu and i am completely new in linux world
what to do with this message?

first saw it while trying to install updates
the same message appears while trying to open synaptic

Try to open a terminal and type:

sudo dpkg --configure -a

and then insert your password.

Then i suppose this solve your problem.

now trying to get some sound out of this machine
(I should try to get Gstreamer working??)
